A new team
Kurochis heart was hammering in his chest. He didn't know if he was ready but then again, was there really ever a moment in your life where you were ready to face life threatening danger directly? The only thing that made him go forward with determination were the friends along his side. They had strategized and decided to swarm out in groups of 4 to cover each others backs and support each other in the battle against the Void. His group had two that would focus on melee attacks and two that would focus on attacks from a distance. For melee attacks they had Argenio, a fierce axe weilding Stelciar and Aster, a Phosray knight with a heart of steel. Then on the more range focused side were Tascira, a Stelciar channeling her power through a Scepter and then Kurochi himself with his ice focused attacks. Kurochi had just met his group today but seeing how powerful they all were gave him hope that he wouldn't be a burden for the team and could contribute as best as his powers would allow. Right now they were all standing on a cliff, looking down on the outskirts of the town being slowly cornered by the Void army. They didn't want to fight the Void in too much of a difficult terrain, knowing that it would only slow down the Stelciar and Phosray but not the Void monsters that could easily phase through obstacles. Now though, they were drawing closer, right between the tree line and the beginning of the rocky mountains that gave a natural protection to the town. Everyone was stiff with focus, muscles tight in anticipation. Waiting. Waiting. Then the bell sounded and they started to fly, Aster on top of Argenios head.
Kurochis team was responsible for holding the slower - but bigger - monsters back while others were focused on the fast ones and those flying in the sky. In their line of sight was their first target, a Void monster that looked like a bear with the tail of a scorpion, making both his front and back difficult places to attack. Right before they got close Aster jumped from Argenios head and used the last distance to glide and land on top of the monster. His small size made it easier to evade attacks and he would take full advantage of that.
Aster was a knight with a kind face and friendly words but there was a vicious streak to him, something greater that came out as soon as he wielded his weapon. It was like watching an actor slip into their role, his whole demeanour changed and he became laser focused on the task at hand. His sword skilled were unchallenged, moving the blade like it was an extension of his own body. He raised his blade while gliding and then fell down, blade slicing directly down to sever the dangerous scorpion tail from the rest of the body. There was no time to celebrate though as the Void was on the verge of knitting itself together again. Aster made quick work of slicing into limbs to part them from the body and to keep the Void from regenerating. Kurochi was impressed of how easily the little Phosray was able to duck away from counter attacks and how he held his own in this battle.
Tascira kept flying at a distance and raised her scepter. She was very fast and had a cool and controlling aura around her. Kurochi wasn't sure if she was used to battle, unphased from the creatures or had just an incredible poker face but so far she had just been very calm while discussing plans and strategies. He immediately felt a bit safer and reassured with having her on the team. It felt like was the only one panicking. Tascira spoke a few whispered words that made the crystal on the Scepter start to glow. Her words got louder and louder as the crystal grew brighter and brighter until it released a beam of energy. It hit the body parts that were slain off by Aster and after a few seconds of focused energy the first part got overtaken and disappeared. Aster kept the monster busy and distracted, giving it no time to strike back at Tascira while she focused her energy to slowly destroy the Void.
Argenios was down on the ground and had helped with slashing at the monsters legs while Aster and Tascira did most of the work. Now he turned towards the next beast charging towards them, a thin and fast creature that looked like a mix of a snake and a skeleton. Long and gangly limbs and a hollow ribcage. Argenios steeled himself, paws gripping onto the earth while he took on a battle ready stance. His face was stoic and concentrated, eyes never leaving the target why his ears were slighlty perked to the side to keep some attention on his surroundings to know how the battle around him was going. The snake like monster suddenly lunged into the air, long body twisting and attack Argenios from above instead of straight one. In the last second before contact he managed to raise his axe above so the wet and dripping teeth of the monster hit steel instead of the top of his head. In an unexpected move Argenios used his power to ram the axe forward, deeper into the creatures mouth to hurt it.
Kurochi knew that they were in a standoff, Argenios couldn't dare remove his axe and face the teeth so closely head on but he was also vulnerable to attacks from the monsters claws like this. Kurochi knew he had to intervene and help his battle partner or it could end badly. Argenios was letting out a battle cry while holding his own against the pure strength of the creature. It was writhing around, clearly unhappy. Kurochi was focused on the long arms, expecting that they would strike out at any moment but it was the long tail that suddenly darted towards Argenios. Kurochi was still flying above them and he let out an icey breath that was so cold it burned the void monster, freezing it temporarily in place. The ice coldness crept up its body from the tail, slowly growing, cold crystals forming. By the time the ice reached its ribcage the tail was already starting to thaw again, it was an attack that was only lasting a little time, enough to buy a few precious seconds but wasn't a final solution. Argenios saw that happening and as soon as the creatures neck got frozen the tail started to move and wiggle again, ready to strike when possible. The monsters neck froze and Argenios used that opportunity to pull back his axe and slash it across the monsters throat, making a clean cut. Kurochi fired another beam to not take any chances on the moving tail. His heart was pounding and he looked on as the body fell down and cracked, splittering into hundreds of pieces. Argenios was breathing heavily and looked up to give Kurochi a nod but that was all the rest they had before they heard Tasciras warning cry as another monster came out of the earth, shaking the ground and preparing to attack. They had managed to fight back two monsters but that was hardly a success in the greater scheme. At least Kurochi knew now how to use his power and support his team members. He was still a bit shaken up but he needed to remember that these were no real creatures that they were hurting. The void was all like one big organism, one force threatening to destroy them. Fighting back was the only choice, there was no chance at peaceful discussion. The monster roared and Kurochi flew closer, ready.
